Under the blazing sun blasting merengue, bachata and dembow rhythms at the George Washington Educational Campus turf field, young Dominican-American soccer stars gathered from Florida to Syracuse for the annual Juegos Juan Pablo Duarte showcase. The electric cross-state clash culminated in a thrilling U17 matchup where New Jersey fought back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 victory over New York, securing the overall state championship on goal differential following a 2-2 U14 thriller earlier in the day.
The high-octane action kicked off with the U14 showcase, where New Jersey surged early behind slick ball movement to build a 2-0 lead before New York stormed back in the second half to force a 2-2 regulation tie. In a nostalgic throwback, New York snatched the match victory via a classic 1v1 MLS-style penalty shootout (1-0 PKs).
Setting the stage for the winner-take-all U17 showdown, New York struck first when their direct, lightning-fast attack caught Jersey off guard, resulting in a blistering free-kick bomb into the top-left corner from right outside the penalty box. Entering the late stages, short-handed New York seemed poised to put the game away, but a missed breakaway shot on an open net flipped the momentum entirely. Jersey immediately launched a ferocious counterattack to equalize at 1-1, before sliding home the game-winner in the final minutes to seal the 2-1 comeback win.
For the guest coaches — current Dominican Republic Women's National Team players Gabriela Cuevas and Gabriela Marte — the day was deeply meaningful. Both were thrilled to be invited and serve as mentors for the Dominican Youth Futbol Network (DYFN) initiative, wishing they had access to this level of community support and representation when they were growing up. On the field, the young athletes were visibly inspired, looking up to the national team players who guided them throughout the showcase.
The stands erupted with thunderous applause, shaking tamboras, and roaring family chants as parents and fans celebrated a masterclass in Dominican youth athleticism, culture, and sportsmanship.
